Going Mobile

It's time to consider building a mobile website to compliment the web presence you already have!

A few weeks ago my phone rang and my young (grade 9) niece said that there was something wrong with her laptop. She ask if our IT department could look at it. It turned out that she had 65 different viruses and some of them were quite nasty! We fixed her computer, but she didn’t get it back until we had a little ‘safe browsing — responsible computing chat’ where I told her about the importance of security updates (‘don’t ignore them!’) and spam (‘don’t click out of curiosity!’)

During the time we were cleaning up her computer I noticed that she was often (daily) logged on to Face book chat. It occurred to me that the fact that her notebook was in my possession didn’t really matter because more often than not she is using her smart phone to carry on the important activities that a grade nine student must carry on (like chatting!).

More and more people are relying on their smart phones to get the information that they need. At some point the younger generation will lead the way and smart portable devices will be their principal communications device.

That’s all well and good, you might think, because the smart phones have browsers and our various websites show up on those browsers (unless you have a flash site which will not show on an iPhone). The truth of the matter is that most of our websites are highly ineffective on mobile browsers as they were designed for much larger screens. It’s true they can be enlarged but then only a few words are visible and the viewer is constantly scrolling or dragging from side to side to try and get the information.
